Welcome to English 12. The primary goals of English 12 are to develop the knowledge and skills required to communicate effectively in writing and to introduce English literature through reading and analyzing short stories, essays, novels, poetry, digital source, news articles and blogs. Students will complete research assignments and are expected to cite all sources effectively. Corresponding literary terms and explanations are in accordance to the core learning outcomes of the British Columbia curriculum and servers to better help you improve your English.

There are three core elements at Victor Immigration and Education Services that help students achieve their goals. One of this big idea is the ability for one to understand various articles and is a core component of the new BC curriculum. Many students often have difficulty with reading and comprehending the nuances of what they are reading. To work on their reading ability, the English 12 package at VIE is designed to help students strengthen their skills in not only understanding what they’re reading, but to be able develop their own concept and opinion of what they are reading. The next element that is a major focus of the BC Curriculum is writing. Writing has always been something that has been heavily emphasized and it is ever-present in the new curriculum. The teachers at VIE will guide students to write in a plethora of different ways, varying from persuasive writing to writing on research topics. Our teachers are well versed in this area and have taught English provincial exams in the past.  The last major element is to study with an analytical mindset. In the new BC curriculum, it is heavily emphasized that students learn how to learn with a critical mind, and not always read things on the surface level.

With the recent changes to the Curriculum, there are a couple of reasons why Chinese and international students may struggle with English 12. First, there is a heavier emphasis on comprehension. This inherently means that there is a need to know more vocabulary. International student’s vocabulary may not be up to the required standard of English 12, so the English 12 course at VIE is designed to help students become more familiar with key vocabulary and help them expand their overall ability to learn new words. Also, reading analysis of different texts and source materials is another thing Chinese student may have trouble with. Many readings, including news articles and blogs, use English that may be recognizable only by native speakers, such as idioms or superlatives. The teachers of VIE will help the students understand and adopt a strategy when trying to better understand the text they are reading. Finally, the VIE English 12 curriculum is designed to help students write better. There will be an assortment of different writing topics and writing styles that the student will be working on improving. Descriptive, persuasive and other writing styles will be looked at in detail.

The classes will primarily be in English, as our aim is to have students listen to as much English as possible. However, there will be parts of the class that will be in Chinese and if students have questions, they are encouraged to ask them. Our goal is to have the class be a fun and engaging opportunity for students to learn and ask questions.
